Coming Soon

A funny thing happened on the way to my monthly writing contest: I started teaching and tutoring again. Haven’t had much time to put everything together lately.

But have no fear. The contests will return. See you then?

“It’s Kind of a Funny Story”

The month of April begins with April Fools Day. What a perfect time to launch a writing contest dedicated to pranks, gags, practical jokes, and assorted tomfoolery.

As you can see from the picture, I take joking around very seriously (full story here). Make me laugh with your best funny story.

You could write:

* a story about the best prank you’ve ever pulled on someone

* a story about the best prank someone has ever pulled on you

* a memoir of the prank war between you and your best frenemy

* a tragicomic tale about a joke that doesn’t end well

* a cringey story about a stand-up comic faced with a tough crowd

*an essay about how to pull off the perfect practical joke

* a funny story featuring one of your favorite comedians as a main or supporting character

* a bio about your favorite funny person

Long story short, it can be anything you want, fiction or non-fiction, as long as it brings the laughs! (But please note: this is a story contest. Do not simply submit a joke.)

“A Story About My Sister”

My older sister’s birthday is on March 11th. That’s why the theme of this month’s contest is “A Story About My Sister.” Your story doesn’t have to be about my sister, though.

You could write:

* a story based on the picture (that’s my older sister making me cry)
* a bio, essay, or memoir about your sister (or your friend who’s like a sister)
* a story where the main character has a special relationship with their sister
* a story about an only child who wishes they had a sister
* a scary story where someone sees their dead sister’s ghost
* a wacky story about twin sisters who get mistaken for one another
* a soap opera about two sisters caught in a love triangle with the same man
* a story set in a convent (nuns are “sisters” too, aren’t they?)

Long story short, it can be anything you want, fiction or non-fiction, as long as there’s a sister in it!

How to Enter (it’s very simple)

(1) Write a story, essay, or memoir (up to 1000 words) about someone who has a sister.

(2) Pay the reading fee. (Venmo business account @GeminiHills – $5.00 USD per story)

“It Came from Planet Prom!”

February is the month when we celebrate Valentine’s Day. What a perfect time to write a love story with a sci-fi twist. Let’s hear your best amazing tale about a high schooler who takes an alien to his/her senior prom.

How did they meet?
What planet is the alien boy/girlfriend from?
What do they have in common?
Is there a language barrier?
How do others react to their relationship?
Any drama with ex-boyfriends or girlfriends?
Any parental objections?
Is it real love or just an inter-planetary fling?

Tell us everything you can about this cosmic couple in this month’s star-crossed writing contest!

How to Enter (it’s very simple)

(1) Write a fictional short story (up to 1000 words) about someone going to their senior prom with a love interest from outer space.

“New Year, New Me” – or so the cliche’ goes. Try as we might to be original, most of us end up making the same old resolutions year after year: I’m gonna lose weight, save money, take that vacation, finish that book, etc. etc.

Let’s do something different this month. Think of a resolution you haven’t made or heard before.

“I’m gonna get a pet aardvark.”
“I’m gonna wear the same clothes every day for a year.”
“I’m gonna play every pinball machine in Detroit.”

Something interesting or outlandish.

It might be the kind of thing that other people want to try for themselves. OR it might be something that no one would ever want to try.

Whatever it is, we want to hear about it.

How to Enter (it’s very simple)

(1) Write a fictional short story (up to 1000 words) about someone with an unusual New Year’s resolution.

(2) Pay the entry fee. ($5.00 USD per story)
